Book Summary:

In which a 13 y/o girl must face the cruel reality of the world after her sheltered life falls apart. Esperanza's father Sixto Ortega, owns El Rancho de las Rosas. Yet Esperanza has never been exposed to the hard life the ranch workers lead. Her life is composed of only her family’s love and affection along with countless parties and celebrations. Suddenly, tragedy strikes the ranch and Esperanza must learn the meaning of hard work as she has to flee to a Great Depression California as a first generation Mexican immigrant.
