ABOUT BOOK DEVOURERS

The Book Devourers started as a IRL bookclub in Arecibo, Puerto Rico where a couple of neighbor book worms decided to get toghether every once in a while to read a book. Eventually Amanda Isabel Nazario Ortiz, the bookclub's president, wanted to expand their small circle. Amanda was a Cadette level Girl Scout in look for her Silver Medal Community Project and a reader's heart. She noticed how hard it was for readers to get toghether. She invited lots of people to her meetings, but people were often too occupied to attend. At times she relized people were too shy to say they were in a book club or that they wanted too. The members of her book club were bullied because of their likes.

There must be a solution. A way to be less shy. A way to bond with other readers without feeling an overwhelming of responsibility. No being forced when you dont feel up to it. Just a way to connect when you want to. What if she made a website? You could connect from anywhere at all. You could find book suggestions, make friends, and comment on your favorite chapters without feeling an obligation. That would make a good community project, right?

And so the 14 year old set off on a journey to pitch her idea and make it come true. She funded it with the help of her mom to help pay for the first year and put up a donations option to see if she could keep it up longer. She drew designs and looked up book recommendations. She talked with her members to help make the word spread and she made it through.

She did it. She built it. She was able to make her dream come true. Her IRL book club from 2023 became a virtual bookclub for middle schooler to disscuss their books from the comfort of their homes. A community that would (Hopefully!) last longer than she would. Thank you for helping my (Amanda) dream come true. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
